The Clinic Model

From the beginning, the clinics were designed to be administered by local leaders, with primary care services delivered by Nurse Practitioners, employed by the community.

Over time, some clinics banded together to form networks that shared costs, providers, and administrative support.

Nurse Practitioners and even the concept of community-owned clinics were new and it became necessary to lobby for new laws to make the clinics legally and financially feasible.  All that work was often initiated and accomplished by community leaders.
